Local Food Project

Local Food Directory

This project to produce 2 issues, each of 20,000 copies, of a directory of local food producers within a 30 mile radius of Colchester was funded by the Social, Economic and Environmental Development (SEED) Programme of The Lottery. The first issue, which contained 68 producers, was launched on 6 February 2004 at the Colchester Farmers' Market. Copies were available through Public Libraries, Visitor Information Centres, the Producers, Farmers' Markets and at en-form. We also arranged some local deliveries in and around Colchester. The directory was well received and has helped many of the producers listed. Many more have asked to be included in the 2nd issue, which will contain in excess of 100 producers. This issue will be printed in December and will be launched in March 2005. Arrangements are being made to ensure it will have a wider circulation with regular top-ups at the most popular sites. The directory will be added to our web site.

Farmers' Markets

The Colchester market is proving very popular and is well supported. Unfortunately the Dedham Market became unsustainable due to lack of support and it was closed in June 2004. We ran 7 weekend markets for the Clacton Factory Shopping Village, which attracted good attendances and also increased trade for the other outlets on the site. We are in negotiation with them to run a further series of markets from Spring 2005.

Organic Vegetable and Fruit Box Scheme

This scheme, which is part of the Local Food Project, delivers organic fruit and vegetable boxes to customers. It has exceeded our expectations and now has in excess of 250 customers, with a steady response still being received. There are now 2 suppliers participating in the scheme, which covers all of North East Essex. The scheme is advertised in the Local Food Directory, in our newsletters and on our web site.
