Small areas of land can be used to grow your own fruit and vegetables or raising other plants . Although not as fashionable as they once were allotments can be an environmentally friendly way of growing your own fruit and vegetables. Colchester council has a total of 18 allotment sites and though many of them are full some sites have vacancies.

It has been estimated that you can grow enough fresh food for a year from a plot just 3 square metres.

You will probably make friends, learn about gardening, be able to share tools and plants and receive advice and support from other allotment holders but you may want to consider sharing one with a neighbour or friend to start of with.

However, there are not always allotments nearby or you may wish to use land for other purposes such as storage etc. If you are looking for land you can register your needs by sending me an e-mail and if you have land or buildings that are not being used you can register its availability also.

What type of land can be registered here?

  • Large gardens which you can no longer look after.

  • Little used yards or parking spaces

  • Unused garages or sheds

  • Unused rooms you could let

  • Flats above your shop

  • Outbuildings and farm buildings

  • Shop selling space

We can all help each other and the environment by making use of our under used assets. They can be available for short or long term. Lets get this land back into use.

? Did you know

Intensive farming has lead to the use of more artificial fertilisers and pesticides which kill the insects, birds and other animals feed on. Where habitat has become fragmented or degraded it has become increasingly difficult for many species to maintain breeding territories and forage effectively for food.
