Energy saving light bulbs save energy and save money on your electricity bill.

The following information will help you to choose the right type of low energy lighting for your needs, and help to save you electricity and money.

Low energy light bulbs

Why use low energy light bulbs?

Low energy light bulbs are more expensive to buy than ordinary light bulbs but have many benefits:

  • Use approximately 75% less electricity

  • Can save £5 - £10 per annum per bulb in Electricity

  • Last eight to ten times longer than a non energy saving lightbulb (about 10,000 hours)

  • Need changing less often and so are particularly useful for the elderly or disabled

  • Ideal for security lights that are left on over night

  • They stay much cooler when switched on.

To get the best use out of your bulb please note the following points:

Where should you use them?

Where lights are normally in use for three or more hours at a time eg - living room, kitchen, stairs/landing, porch.

Restrictions:

Cannot be used with some dimmer switches, electronic timers or light sensitive switches. Check with manufacturers instructions.

  • 20W is equivalent to a standard 100w bulb, and suitable for most light fittings

Fluorescent tubes

Today's fluorescent tubes are now more efficient, last longer and give a better quality of light. If you are using a fluorescent tube which is several years old, it may make savings by replacing it with one of the latest types. Also you may even find that a tube with a lower wattage gives you the same light as your old one. This will give you even better savings.

Savings

  • Fluorescent tubes use approximately 85% less electricity than other lamps with the same light output.

  • They last up to eighteen times longer.

Lighting tips

  • Turn off lights which you don't need on, but don't leave dark areas which might be dangerous.

  • Replace all faulty tubes and fittings.

  • Keep your windows clean to enhance the best of natural daylight.

  • Keep your light fittings and bulbs clean so that they give the best light.

  • Use dimmer switches on tungsten lamps where lighting requirements vary to give you just the amount of light you need. They reduce the amount of electricity you use and make your light bulbs last longer.

If every UK household installed 3 low-energy lightbulbs enough energy would be saved in a year to supply all the street lighting in the UK.
